About DeerWeed
A drought resistant forage, DeerWeed provides wildlife managers
with a high protein forage option (28% protein) in the summer months
when oats, blends and similar crops are not as effective. DeerWeed’s
long tap root and wide-ranging lateral root system make it drought
resistant. It does not need extensive soil preparation or fertilizer
as some blends on the market require.
Planting can begin in early spring through late summer. Animals
begin feeding when the plants are young. Wildlife and livestock alike
feed off the leaves and new growth which contains the highest levels
of protein. DeerWeed sprouts growth readily to sustain long-term
forage options from spring through hunting season.
DeerWeed is an annual that produces tremendous forage mass. Studies
show that in 45 to 60 days it can yield 2000 to 3000 pounds of dry
forage per acre. DeerWeed (Kenaf) is a member of the mallow family
(Hibiscus). It is a tough fibrous plant native to Central Africa and
grows 12 to 18 feet tall. It has been used for centuries as a source
of forage, dry feed, fiber and cordage.
Planting
DeerWeed
We suggest planting two to six pounds of seed per acre. DeerWeed
requires only two things … sun and water. The more sunlight
and water, the faster the plant grows. DeerWeed is not very particular
about the soil it is planted in. It does not require large amounts
of fertilizer or soil preparation. Not a blend …100% seed … no
filler or inert matter.
| Planting method: |
Broadcast or drill. Cover the seeds lightly with ½ to1
inch of soil. Do not compact the soil. |
| When to plant: |
Early spring through the summer. Key is to have soil moisture
for germination. Soil temperature needs to be at least 60 degrees
or warmer. |
| Amount of seed: |
Two to six pounds per acre. Increase the ratio of seed per
acre for large deer populations and weed concerns. |
| Planting depth |
½ to 1 inch. Do Not compact the soil. |
| Moisture: |
It is important to plant when there is moisture in the soil
for good germination. |
| Fertilizer: |
Minimal fertilizer is required. It responds well to nitrogen,
but doesn’t require it. Rotating with a legume crop works
well. |
| Sunlight: |
Sunlight is crucial. The longer the days the quicker DeerWeed
grows. |
| Germination: |
97% germination. DeerWeed germinates in seven to 10 days depending
on the soil moisture and temperature. |
